Premier Christine Fréchette Considers Return of American Wines to SAQ Shelves
Premier Christine Fréchette has signaled a potential reopening of SAQ shelves to American wines, provided Quebec secures tangible benefits beforehand.
During a press briefing in Yamachiche, Fréchette highlighted the need for reductions in tariff barriers for key Quebec sectors like forestry, aluminum, and manufacturing, which have been impacted by U.S. policies.
While emphasizing that supply management, Quebec culture, and the French language are non-negotiable, she hinted at the possibility of allowing American wines back if concessions are made by the U.S.
The federal government is reportedly willing to lift the ban on American wine sales in Canada in exchange for favorable terms from the U.S., according to reports. The Quebec government maintains authority over alcohol sales within the province.
Fréchette’s visit to the Mauricie region also included the introduction of new candidates. Simon Allaire, who initially opted not to run for re-election, changed his mind after a persuasive phone call from the premier. Other candidates introduced include Marie-Ève Myrand and Guy Veillette.
Fréchette, who will run in the Trois-Rivières riding, has been active in supporting new candidates in the region as part of her party’s election strategy.
