A young teen is facing possible charges after allegedly taking her parents’ vehicle without permission and crashing it after fleeing from police in Nanaimo.
According to Nanaimo RCMP, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. on July 25.
Police say an officer spotted a vehicle travelling southbound on Terminal Avenue at 118 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. When the officer attempted a traffic stop, the driver accelerated away.
Due to safety concerns, RCMP decided not to pursue the vehicle and instead alerted other officers to be on the lookout for it.
Shortly afterward, police received a report of a vehicle that had left the roadway.
Officers attended the scene and searched the area, locating the alleged driver, who was identified as a 13-year-old girl. She was taken into custody.
The vehicle sustained significant damage and was towed from the scene.
Following an investigation, police determined the girl had taken her parents’ vehicle without permission.
She was later released into the care of her guardian.
RCMP say the girl could face charges, and the investigation remains ongoing.
