Mother of former Quebec Premier François Legault dies at 97

François Legault’s mother died Wednesday at the age of 97, the former Quebec premier said.

Posting on social media, Legault paid a moving tribute to Pauline Schetagne, whom he said was “strong, very strong woman” who “instilled in him values of work, effort, love, respect.”

The former premier, who left office earlier this year, said while Schetagne had made sure he and his siblings did well in school despite she not having a chance to study past the ninth grade.

Schetagne was also involved in volunteer organizing at school, at the Cercle des Fermières, at the Club de l’Âge d’Or, at the clothing counter for the less fortunate, he said.

Schetagne had lived by herself for over 40 years after Legault’s father died at the age of 59.
