Special weather statement says up to 40 mm possible across Toronto, GTA

A special weather statement is in effect for the GTA, warning of locally heavy rainfall across the region.

Environment Canada says lake effect showers off of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay could bring upwards of 20 to 40 millimetres throughout the afternoon and evening.

“Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas,” the national weather service advisory says. “Avoid low-lying areas. Watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.”

Hamilton and parts of cottage country are also under similar warnings, which stretch as far west as London, up to Bracebridge and Haliburton, and down to Oshawa in the east.

The rain,, with the potential for thunderstorms, is expected to taper off this evening before resuming once again on Monday.
