A new suspension has been handed down to a fourth SPVM police officer amidst allegations of racism and misconduct at Station 39 in Montreal North.
The Montreal police disclosed that the incidents in question occurred during the officer’s tenure in the night patrol unit at the now-disbanded station. The suspension was initiated last Wednesday.
Allegedly, the officer was among the 16 individuals who were relieved of their patrol duties and reassigned to roles with no public interaction as the probe into the accusations progresses.
In a news release, the force emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards discriminatory or racist behaviors, whether directed at staff members or citizens.
While three officers had been previously suspended, one of those suspensions may not be directly linked to racism. Police chief Fady Dagher hinted at the potential for criminal charges.
The allegations include claims that officers shaved the hair of racialized individuals to keep as “trophies.” Dagher confirmed that the reports of haircutting were part of the accusations.
The accusations have spurred widespread condemnation and demands for action from politicians and community organizations.
The SPVM’s professional standards division is overseeing the investigation.
