Air Canada has taken action against two of its employees who were arrested by the RCMP in connection with alleged drug trafficking activities at Montréal-Trudeau Airport. The airline has suspended the employees, who were involved in ground operations, following the arrests made on Wednesday.
According to the RCMP, the employees were released but could potentially face charges related to a conspiracy involving the smuggling of drugs, including cocaine and cannabis, through the airport’s secure areas. The investigation was initiated in May when 62.5 kg of cocaine hidden in backpacks from Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, were seized by the Canada Border Services Agency. Additionally, 56 kg of cannabis were confiscated during the probe.
Marie-Pierre Guertin, a spokesperson for the RCMP, mentioned the possibility of further arrests in connection with this case, indicating that the investigation is ongoing. She emphasized that the evidence gathered will determine if there are grounds for accusations, a process that could take several weeks or months.
This incident is not an isolated one, as Guertin highlighted a similar drug-trafficking arrest in Toronto earlier this year. She underlined the prevalence of such activities in recent months and stressed the law enforcement’s commitment to tackling these issues.
