Modcity, a prominent developer, is facing accusations of illegally cutting down mature trees at a property on Ennerdale Road. Residents who confronted the workers were shocked when the crew responded by throwing pears at them.
According to witnesses, the trees that were chopped down were protected and owned by the city. When residents approached the workers to address the issue, they were met with indifference and aggression, as the workers callously hurled fruit at them. The scene left the community in dismay.
Several neighbors have identified one of the individuals involved as Rohan Sadana, a co-founder of Modcity. Reports claim that when residents tried to intervene, Sadana brazenly bit into a pear and threw it at them. Meanwhile, other workers continued to cut down trees on the property.
The extensive deforestation is evident in before-and-after photos of the lot, which was once densely populated with trees surrounding a small house. Now, the majority of the trees have been removed, including the stumps.
Local councillor Alejandra Bravo expressed her outrage at the incident, highlighting it as part of a pattern of misconduct in the area. Bravo emphasized that the community is weary of such actions and demands accountability.
The issue extends beyond the immediate impact on the environment, as the developer could face significant fines for each unauthorized tree removal. The community, led by Bravo, is determined to hold Modcity accountable for their actions.
Despite attempts to reach out to Modcity for a response, there has been no comment from the developer. Councillor Bravo stressed that while she supports development in the area, she condemns the disrespectful and unlawful behavior exhibited by Modcity.
As Toronto strengthens its tree protection regulations, with enhanced measures effective from September 1st, the community is hopeful for better enforcement to safeguard its green spaces.
