A campaign to overturn British Columbia’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) has been granted approval by Elections BC, announced by BC Conservative MLA Harman Bhangu.
Representing Langley-Abbotsford, Bhangu emphasized that the petition allows citizens of British Columbia to challenge the controversial legislation through the province’s initiative petition process.
“This is a pivotal opportunity to oppose and revoke DRIPA,” the BC Conservatives affirmed.
Expressing strong opposition, Bhangu stressed, “DRIPA has brought chaos to B.C. and must be repealed. The NDP government has been indecisive about it for too long, and it’s time for a clear stance.”
To advance the initiative and have it reviewed by the Legislative Assembly, supporters must gather signatures from a minimum of 10% of registered voters in each of the province’s 93 electoral districts.
The petition drive is set to begin on October 26, with signatures required to be submitted to Elections BC by January 25, 2027.
Bhangu highlighted the historical significance of the province’s initiative process, attributing its existence to MLA Mike Farnworth.
“The initiative process was advocated by MLA Mike Farnworth decades ago to give British Columbians a voice through petitions,” noted Bhangu. “It’s time to make use of this power that we have.”
Backing the petition, BC Conservative Leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay urged residents to participate actively.
“This petition is a stand against the negative effects of DRIPA and a chance to safeguard our province,” Findlay emphasized. “If you value your rights, equity, job opportunities, and the future of British Columbia, join us by signing. Let’s make a difference.”
