Having played for the Blue Jays from 1981 to 1986, Martinez played a crucial role in the team’s historic 1985 division title before falling to the Kansas City Royals in the ALCS. Despite also having stints with other teams, Martinez fondly recalls his time with the Royals in 1976 as one of his favorite seasons.
Transitioning from player to broadcaster in 1987, Martinez eventually became the Blue Jays manager in 2001, leading the team for a brief period.
