The City of Montreal is implementing changes to trash collection schedules in four boroughs to promote waste reduction and sustainability. Starting October 1, residents in Ahuntsic-Cartierville and Villeray–Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension will have garbage pickup every two weeks, while this change will take effect on November 2 for Pierrefonds-Roxboro and L’Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève.
The City aims to boost composting and recycling efforts, decrease landfill waste, and support the region’s environmental transition with this initiative. Residents in the affected areas will receive black trash bins, and there will be no alteration to the collection day.
Previous transitions to biweekly pickup in boroughs like Saint-Laurent have led to a significant 17% reduction in landfill waste. This move aligns with the Montreal Metropolitan Community’s call for municipalities to limit trash collections by the end of 2027, indicating a broader trend towards sustainable waste management practices in the region.
