Legal Aid Lawyers Strike in Quebec Over Salary Dispute
Legal aid lawyers in several regions of Quebec have initiated a strike this week, seeking equitable pay comparable to Crown prosecutors.
Cédric Bernier, a key figure in the Quebec City union, highlighted that the collective agreement for legal aid lawyers in the affected regions has lapsed for three years. The strike is currently impacting legal aid offices in Quebec City, Outaouais, Estrie, and Côte-Nord, scheduled to continue until Friday.
These lawyers provide crucial legal representation for individuals who cannot afford private legal services, such as those with mental health issues, students, seniors, and low-income individuals. The strike has already resulted in delays for 230 criminal and youth cases in Quebec City alone.
While there is a possibility of extending the strike if negotiations stall, Bernier emphasized the unions’ reluctance, considering the potential adverse effects on their vulnerable clients. He mentioned the continuous struggle legal aid lawyers face in advocating for fair salaries compared to Crown prosecutors.
Despite the government’s offer of a 14.5% salary increase over four years, Bernier pointed out that Crown prosecutors received a higher raise of 17%. The onus now lies on the government to enhance their proposal to prevent further labor unrest.
