Climate Week festival in Montreal aims to spark environmental conversations and action
The inaugural Climate Week festival kicks off on Tuesday in Montreal, gathering residents, organizations, and advocates for a six-day event focused on addressing climate change. With the upcoming Quebec election on Oct. 5, advocates hope to push environmental issues to the forefront of public discussion.
Juliette Champoux-Pellegrin, co-founder & director of Montréal Climate Week, emphasized the importance of leaders addressing environmental concerns, stating that this crucial topic has been missing from the current debate.
The festival comes in the wake of Canada reporting nearly 5,000 fires and 4.1 million hectares burned by mid-August, as well as flash flooding incidents in various Montreal neighborhoods following intense rainfall.
Many Montrealers have personally felt the impacts of extreme weather, with some sharing stories of prolonged power outages and noticeable shifts in climate patterns.
Expressing a desire for government action, voters stressed the significance of funding projects related to global warming and climate change, emphasizing the urgency of addressing these issues.
Festival attendees can look forward to over 125 events throughout the city, offering a range of activities such as conferences, workshops, family-friendly outings, panels, and screenings—all with the goal of fostering knowledge-sharing, idea exchange, and collective action.
Champoux-Pellegrin highlighted the festival’s inclusive nature, welcoming individuals from all backgrounds to participate in discussions and activities, regardless of their level of expertise in climate-related matters.
