Two women from Quebec were charged by the Ontario Provincial Police for using stolen personal information to finance vehicles in their names, utilizing fake documents at dealerships in Hawkesbury. This type of fraudulent activity involves scammers creating “synthetic identities” by obtaining personal data, such as credit cards, IDs, and altering insurance documents, to apply for auto loans.
The police were able to apprehend the suspects involved in this scheme, Veronica Espinal Correa, 41, from Montreal-Nord, and Adriana Saintelmy, 30, from Saint-Laurent, Quebec. They are facing joint charges related to this case.
Authorities are advising individuals who suspect they may have been victims of cybercrime to report it to their local police station or contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre through their online reporting system or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
