Montreal Sees Decrease in Various Crimes in 2025, but an Increase in Sexual Assaults and Break-Ins
According to the latest annual report from the Montreal police released on Wednesday, crime statistics for 2025 show a mixed trend. While gun crime, attempted murders, arson, motor vehicle thefts, and fraud all decreased, there was a rise in sex assaults and break-ins.
The report indicates an overall decline in crimes against people by 0.4% and crimes against property by 4.2% compared to the previous year. Montreal police attribute these decreases to the dedication of their teams and the collaboration with community partners.
Notably, crimes against people in Montreal dropped for the first time in years, with attempted murders decreasing by 25%. However, sexual assaults saw a 5.7% increase, emphasizing the importance of prevention efforts and victim support.
Motor vehicle thefts, mischief, arson, and fraud were also down in 2025, with vehicle theft seeing a significant decline. On the other hand, break-ins experienced a 5.8% increase, although the total number remains below pre-pandemic levels.
Firearm-related crimes decreased by 15.3%, with a notable drop in firearm discharges as well. Despite a decrease in overall firearms recovered, Montreal police emphasize the importance of ongoing prevention efforts and awareness to combat armed violence.
