Authorities in British Columbia are currently investigating a peculiar incident that occurred on the evening of August 24th, involving a teenage girl and an individual in an unconventional costume.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the girl was walking near Shamrock Drive close to the Old Okanagan Highway in West Kelowna when she found herself being pursued by someone dressed as the character “Cat in the Hat” from the famous Dr. Seuss book.
Fortunately, the girl escaped unharmed and managed to reach home safely, as confirmed by the police.
While donning a costume is not illegal, the RCMP emphasizes that any behavior causing another person to feel threatened could potentially lead to criminal charges such as harassment.
Cpl. Devon Gerrits of the West Kelowna RCMP expressed serious concern over the incident, stating, “Regardless of the individual’s intentions, instilling fear in a young person by following them is alarming.”
Gerrits further emphasized the importance of understanding that what might be perceived as a harmless prank can have severe repercussions when it instills genuine fear in others.
Individuals who may possess relevant doorbell or dash cam footage from around 9 p.m. in the area are urged to contact the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.
