A portion of Gerrard Street East in Toronto is currently closed to drivers due to a watermain break at Coxwell Avenue that caused flooding in the area. This incident has not only impacted traffic but also affected TTC services in the vicinity.
The watermain rupture occurred early Wednesday morning, leading to a swift response from emergency teams who have been working diligently at the site since then.
City officials have described the repair process as challenging due to the presence of other underground utilities, requiring ongoing efforts to resolve the issue.
Residents in the affected area have experienced disruptions in their water supply, prompting the City to provide bottled water to properties between Coxwell Avenue and Wembley Drive where service has been temporarily interrupted.
Repair crews are working tirelessly to fix the watermain break, with the City aiming to have water services restored within the next few hours.
Initially, one eastbound lane on Gerrard Street was closed for repair work, but both lanes are now shut down. The City plans to reopen at least one lane in time for the evening rush hour to alleviate traffic congestion.
As a result of the closure, the TTC has implemented shuttle buses between Main Street Station and Gerrard Street East at Greenwood Avenue in place of regular streetcar services.
