A Toronto family is taking legal action after their teenage son suffered life-changing injuries in a collision outside his high school. The incident occurred at a hazardous crossing where a speed camera had been removed earlier. The lawsuit names the City, the province, and the driver involved in the crash.
The collision, which took place on March 25, 2026, at Humber Boulevard North and Louvain Street in front of St. Oscar Romero Catholic Secondary School, left 15-year-old Elijah Adebayo with severe injuries including a traumatic brain injury, vision loss, skull and femur fractures, and lasting cognitive and psychological effects.
The family’s statement of claim, filed in Superior Court, holds the driver responsible for the crash but also points to the City and the province for allegedly neglecting safety measures at the known high-risk school crossing. The lawsuit mentions the removal of an Automated Speed Enforcement camera in November 2025, which had been installed earlier to address speeding concerns.
According to the claim, neither the City nor the province implemented replacement safety measures after removing the speed camera, despite prior complaints about speeding and unsafe pedestrian routes in the area. The family is seeking $16 million in damages, citing negligence on the part of the driver, the City, and the province.
In response, a City spokesperson expressed condolences to the family and highlighted ongoing safety initiatives under the Vision Zero program, including features like radar boards, flashing beacons, and doubled fines for speeding in designated safety zones. However, the City did not directly address the allegations in the lawsuit, stating that the matter is now in court.
The lawsuit also accuses the driver of negligence for various actions leading up to the collision and raises concerns about his medical history affecting his ability to drive safely. The Ontario government is criticized for repealing speed camera legislation without ensuring alternative safety measures, particularly in school zones.
