A police officer in Niagara Region has been charged with impaired driving following a dramatic incident where he allegedly fled from a traffic stop and crashed into another vehicle.
According to authorities, the incident unfolded in Niagara-on-the-Lake at around 8:20 p.m. on a Thursday when reports of an impaired driver led to an attempted traffic stop involving a grey Dodge Ram pickup truck at Glendale Avenue and Taylor Road.
Despite police efforts to halt the vehicle, the driver refused to stop, prompting a pursuit that was eventually halted for public safety concerns. Shortly after, the pickup truck collided with another vehicle, resulting in the driver’s arrest at the scene and their subsequent hospitalization for serious injuries.
The accused officer, Paul-Andre Seguin, aged 54 and hailing from Fort Erie, is now confronted with multiple charges, including impaired operation of a vehicle, fleeing from a peace officer, and dangerous operation.
Having served for 21 years with the Niagara regional police force, Seguin has been placed on suspension with pay pending an investigation. Authorities have disclosed that the Special Investigations Unit has been called in due to the injuries sustained by Seguin during the crash.
Fortunately, no additional injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
