Isaac del Toro made history at the Montreal Cycling Grand Prix by securing a thrilling victory over French cyclist Paul Seixas in an exciting sprint finish. The win, making del Toro the youngest champion in the race’s history, also marked a remarkable fifth consecutive title for the UAE Emirates – XRG team in the Montreal edition.
Celebrating his triumph, del Toro credited his teammates, particularly Brandon McNulty, who stood alongside him on the podium as the third-place finisher. Del Toro expressed his gratitude for his team’s hard work and strength, especially highlighting the support from Brandon and Adam Yates.
In a fiercely competitive race, American Quinn Simmons of Lidl-Trek clinched the fourth spot, while Belgian Remco Evenepoel of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe claimed fifth place after his victory in Quebec on Friday. Del Toro and Seixas demonstrated exceptional teamwork as they broke away on the final climb of Camillien-Houde, with del Toro ultimately outpacing Seixas in a dramatic sprint to take the win.
Among the Canadian cyclists, Michael Woods showcased a commendable performance, finishing in 18th place. However, Derek Gee-West of Lidl-Trek faced challenges after a collision with other riders, forcing him to abandon the race. Canadian champion Jérôme Gauthier displayed resilience by leading the day’s breakaway for over 80 kilometers before rejoining the peloton and eventually withdrawing from the race.
The event saw Quebec’s Pier-André Côté and Guillaume Boivin encountering setbacks, with Côté withdrawing before the 15th climb and Boivin abandoning the race after just two laps. Looking ahead, the cycling world will turn its attention to the upcoming UCI Road World Championships scheduled to take place in Montreal from September 20 to 27.
