A diver in Percé had a close encounter with a white shark but managed to escape unharmed. Plongée Percé reported that the diver, who was part of an expedition in the Gaspé Peninsula, remained conscious and successfully removed his equipment after the incident. The organization provided an update on social media, detailing how the diver, accompanied by an instructor and an instructor-in-training, came into contact with the shark before it swiftly disappeared.
Following the encounter, the team swiftly returned to the safety of their boat, where the injured diver took off his gear and received immediate first aid. Emergency services, including the Coast Guard and an awaiting ambulance at Percé wharf, were promptly notified and involved in the response.
As a precautionary measure, all diving activities in Percé have been suspended for the season. Despite this rare incident, data from the Canadian Shark Attack Registry reveals that only 15 confirmed shark incidents have occurred in Canada over the past 330 years, out of 30 total reported attacks.
