Montreal Gears Up for UCI Road World Championships
Montreal is abuzz as it readies to host the prestigious UCI Road World Championships, where elite cyclists from across the globe will race through the city’s streets. The event kicks off with the Rando Vélo on Saturday, a recreational ride that will see over 6,000 participants cycling on official routes designed for various ages and abilities.
The championships, running from Sept. 20 to 27, will feature nearly 1,000 athletes competing for 13 world titles and are expected to draw around 500,000 spectators along the race routes. However, these festivities come with a few challenges for Montrealers, including road closures, parking restrictions, and transportation changes.
Several Montreal boroughs and Westmount will see race routes winding through their streets, leading to significant traffic and parking impacts. To accommodate the events, barriers will be installed along the daily race routes, with street closures beginning at 7 a.m. and reopening in the early evening.
With the main event site set at the foot of Mount Royal, near Park Avenue, both drivers and students will experience disruptions. School schedules in certain neighborhoods, including Verdun, Outremont, and Île-des-Sœurs, will be adjusted to accommodate the cycling events. The Marguerite-Bourgeoys School Service Centre emphasized the importance of ensuring student and staff safety while maintaining the school calendar.
Furthermore, potential labor disruptions loom as blue-collar workers in Montreal gear up for possible strikes. The Syndicat des cols bleus regroupés de Montréal, or CUPE Local 301, is rallying for better working conditions, with concerns raised over the proposed contract terms by Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada’s administration.
As Montreal transforms into a cycling haven for the UCI Road World Championships, the city braces itself for both the excitement of world-class competition and the challenges that come with hosting such a massive event.
