A commemorative gathering is set to take place in Longueuil this Monday evening, marking the one-year anniversary since the tragic passing of Nooran Rezayi, a 15-year-old teenager who lost his life in a fatal encounter with a police officer on September 21, 2025.
The incident occurred during a police operation in the Saint-Hubert area, prompted by a 911 call reporting a group of youths suspected to be carrying weapons. Subsequent investigations by the Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI) revealed that the sole firearm recovered at the scene belonged to the officer involved in the shooting.
Following its inquiry, the BEI furnished its findings to the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) for review in March. The DPCP is currently deliberating on whether charges should be brought forward in this case.
Nooran Rezayi’s family is anticipated to be present at the vigil and has extended an invitation to the community to join them in paying tribute to Nooran’s memory.
The gathering is slated to commence at 6 p.m. outside a Longueuil Metropolitan Police Service (SPAL) station, with participants planning to proceed to the location where the tragic incident unfolded.
In a parallel probe into the events of September 21, 2025, the Montreal Police Service disclosed in June that 11 young individuals were facing criminal allegations. However, in August, the DPCP halted legal proceedings against these individuals citing “new information” and a “complex legal issue” that had been raised.
Furthermore, the Quebec government has initiated an administrative review into the handling of the situation by the SPAL.
