A tragic incident unfolded as an elderly cyclist, aged 80, lost her life in a hit-and-run collision. The suspect driver involved in the incident has been apprehended by authorities, although released pending further investigation.
According to Chilliwack RCMP, the female cyclist was struck at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Woodbine Street around 6:00 p.m. on a Saturday and was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, law enforcement identified and seized the suspected vehicle involved in the collision. An adult male driver was taken into custody but was subsequently released as the investigation progresses.
Authorities have ruled out alcohol or drugs as potential factors in the accident.
In a plea for assistance, the police are calling on the public to come forward with any CCTV or dashcam footage that may feature a burgundy/red 2021 Chevrolet Silverado crew cab in the vicinity of Portage Avenue, Woodbine Street, Hazel Street, Menzies Street, or Yale Road at the time of the tragedy.
