The Ontario police watchdog is currently investigating a shooting incident that occurred in Belleville on Sunday evening, resulting in injuries to two individuals, including a police officer.
According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), gunfire was exchanged between an unidentified man and a police officer near the Sons of Jacob synagogue at the intersection of Bleecker and Victoria Avenues around 7:10 p.m. Both individuals were taken to a hospital for treatment, with one man in critical condition.
Authorities have stated that it remains unclear whether the synagogue was specifically targeted, emphasizing to the public that there is currently no ongoing threat.
Former MP Ryan Williams posted photos online showing the synagogue’s stained glass windows riddled with bullet holes, raising concerns about the safety of worshippers during the incident.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed his outrage over the shooting in a social media post on Sunday night, condemning the attack that took place outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue during Yom Kippur observances. Ford reassured the Jewish community in Belleville and across Ontario that they have the right to worship without fear and pledged to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Additionally, Ford praised the injured officer for their bravery and thanked all first responders for swiftly ensuring the safety of the community.
In response to the incident, various police agencies in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) have announced plans to enhance visibility and patrols around synagogues and other places of worship as a precautionary measure.
