The Toronto Blue Jays, last year’s top team in the American League, have been knocked out of the running for the 2026 postseason. Despite a strong effort, they suffered a 4-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday.
Blue Jays’ pitcher Max Scherzer put on a solid performance with seven strikeouts, but was unable to prevent the Orioles from scoring four earned runs, including a crucial two-run homer by Peter Alonso in the fifth inning.
While Scherzer may get one final chance to pitch in the season finale against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, the team’s fate has already been sealed.
The Blue Jays had a tough road ahead of them, needing to win all remaining games while hoping for losses by the Chicago White Sox or Cleveland Guardians to secure a playoff spot.
This season has been a disappointment for the Blue Jays, especially considering their near miss at the World Series title in 2025. Various setbacks, from key player injuries to a less-than-stellar performance from slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr., have plagued the team.
With four games left in their schedule, including the second game against the Orioles on Wednesday evening, the Blue Jays are looking to finish strong.
Following a day off on Thursday, they will close out the season with a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds in Toronto.
