The city council of Ottawa has made the decision to rename Trump Avenue, putting an end to the longstanding debate surrounding the street’s politically charged name and officially breaking its connection to U.S. President Donald Trump.
This resolution, supported by a staff recommendation, comes at a time of strained Canada–U.S. relations due to trade disagreements.
Trump Avenue, situated in Ottawa’s Central Park neighborhood, was established in the late 1990s and early 2000s as part of a community constructed on former Experimental Farm land. The entire area was designed with a distinct New York City theme, with streets and parks named after iconic Manhattan locations such as Manhattan Crescent, Staten Way, Bloomingdale Street, and Madison Park. Back then, Trump was primarily recognized as a prominent New York developer.
The council’s decision marks the beginning of the process to choose a new name for the street, inform residents, and update municipal records. This transition will involve coordinating with emergency services, utilities, and Canada Post to ensure a smooth changeover.
This modification arrives amidst escalating tensions between Trump and Canadian leaders, marked by recent disagreements over tariffs, trade talks, and public exchanges that have extended into local governance. Ottawa council members emphasized that while the street was originally unrelated to the U.S. president, its continued designation had become unsettling for locals.
City officials have stated that the renaming procedure will involve discussing the matter with affected homeowners before a final name is selected.
