The Canadian Football League (CFL) is considering the addition of a new team in Quebec.
According to reports from TVA’s Stéphane Turcot and 3 Down Nation, the CFL’s board of governors recently voted on the potential inclusion of a franchise in Quebec City. The decision, made on Sept. 9 with only primary voting members in attendance, sets the stage for a possible 10th CFL team pending the fulfillment of certain conditions.
Confirming the interest in expansion from various cities, the CFL highlighted Quebec City as a top contender. The league expressed optimism about the prospect, citing the city’s passionate football fans, robust community and corporate support, population growth, and economic potential as factors that could contribute to a successful CFL presence in the region.
While reports point to real estate developer William Trudel as a key financial supporter for the expansion, no official comments have been provided by the Trudel Group. The CFL’s discussions on potential expansion continue positively, with a focus on strengthening its presence in Quebec and potentially establishing a natural provincial rivalry.
Since welcoming the Ottawa Redblacks in 2014, the CFL has been exploring opportunities to expand its reach and fan base across Canada.
