Former British Columbia Conservative Leader John Rustad has announced that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming provincial election on Oct. 24. Rustad, who has been involved in B.C. politics for over two decades, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent the Nechako Lakes constituency since 2005, describing it as one of the most rewarding experiences of his life.
In a statement, Rustad criticized the New Democratic Party (NDP) for calling a snap election, which he believes has spurred a unification of the Conservative movement. He endorsed interim Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson, praising him as a “quality individual.” Rustad took aim at NDP Leader David Eby, accusing him of calling the election prematurely to protect his own position rather than defend the government’s actions.
Despite facing challenges in the past, including an exodus of members under former leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Rustad highlighted the party’s resurgence following her resignation and the election announcement. He called on his fellow Conservatives to work towards building a better future for British Columbia.
Rustad’s political journey has seen him transition from a cabinet minister in the B.C. Liberal government to being ousted from the opposition caucus for social media activity in 2022. He later joined the Conservatives and played a key role in the party’s significant growth, culminating in their strong showing in the 2024 provincial election.
