Toronto Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Apologizes for Controversial Comments
Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the Toronto Blue Jays’ first baseman, took the opportunity to address reporters at Rogers Centre regarding a recent Spanish-language interview where controversial comments were made. Through an interpreter, Guerrero Jr. expressed regret, stating, “I felt from my heart that my fans and my teammates needed an apology from me. I’m going to continue working hard to make my contract great.”
In the interview clip, Guerrero Jr. discussed seeking solace in conversations with his Hall of Fame father during restless nights caused by performance anxiety and an on-and-off back injury that he emphasized was not an excuse for his struggles at the plate. However, it was a snippet where he mentioned his $500-million, 14-year contract being based on past achievements rather than future performance that sparked online backlash.
Reflecting on the situation, Guerrero Jr. admitted that his comments did not accurately convey his intentions, stating, “It’s been a disappointing year for me. I couldn’t help my team to accomplish our goal. It’s hard for me.”
The baseball star also mentioned that his father had advised him on his actions, urging him to issue an apology to his fans. After an impressive postseason in the previous year, Guerrero Jr.’s performance in 2026 has significantly declined, with only one home run hit at Rogers Centre.
