Quebec cyclist Magdeleine Vallières Mill faced a challenging road race at the Road World Championships in Montreal, ultimately withdrawing from the competition with over 60 kilometers to go. As the defending champion, Vallières Mill was caught in a major crash involving 15 riders, including her fellow Canadian athlete Adèle Normand, with 94 kilometers remaining.
Despite getting back on her bike and attempting to catch up with the main group alongside Normand, Vallières Mill had to retire from the race with just five laps left on the Montreal circuit. The crash left visible injuries, with blood on her right thigh and elbow, leading her to seek medical attention after exiting the competition.
The incident also forced out other notable contenders such as Spain’s Paula Blasi and Norway’s Sigrid Ytterhus Haugseta, who both withdrew after encountering crashes at the same spot. As the race progressed, only Sarah Van Dam remained as the sole Canadian cyclist among the approximately 40 riders left in the peloton with just over 50 kilometers to go.
