Residents in Brampton are being urged to stay vigilant following a recent surge in distraction thefts, with Peel Regional Police (PRP) sounding the alarm after an elderly woman fell victim to a brazen robbery totaling $19,000 in gold jewelry.
The incident occurred on July 28 around 6 p.m. near Chinguacousy Road and Sandalwood Parkway West. The woman was approached by two women in a white SUV who engaged her in a seemingly friendly manner. However, one of the suspects discreetly swapped the victim’s gold necklace for a metal one, and also removed three gold bangles before making a swift getaway.
PRP investigators are set to reveal more information at a press conference scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, shedding light on a worrying trend of distraction thefts sweeping across Peel Region.
Reportedly, there have been over 230 distraction theft reports in the area this year, with a total of 266 incidents recorded by Aug. 12. This surge marks a stark increase from previous years, with only 25 incidents in 2024 and 222 in 2025.
Police detectives are now exploring potential connections between Peel thefts and similar occurrences elsewhere in Ontario. Typically, older adults are targeted when alone, either in public spaces or near their residences.
The suspects often strike up conversations, ask for directions, offer gifts, or attempt physical contact as a means to gain victims’ trust and divert their attention.
Recent statistics from Peel police indicate that nearly 85% of these thefts occur between noon and 4 p.m., with 77% involving gold necklaces, chains, pendants, or other jewelry items.
Deputy Chief Marc Andrews emphasized the swiftness of the thefts, stating that suspects rely on appearing amicable to deceive victims. He urged residents to trust their instincts, maintain awareness of their surroundings, and create distance from suspicious individuals.
The police are encouraging anyone with information about the Brampton incident or other distraction thefts to come forward and reach out to Peel Regional Police.
