The Mississauga mayoral debate heated up as incumbent Carolyn Parrish and former mayor Bonnie Crombie clashed in a fiery exchange, leaving other participants concerned about the tone of the event. Parrish accused Crombie of being a “blonde bombshell” that instilled fear in their staff, while Crombie criticized Parrish for her disrespectful behavior towards residents.
The debate, moderated by CityNews’ Mark McAllister, witnessed tense moments as personal attacks overshadowed discussions on municipal issues. Councillors Dipika Damerla and Alvin Tedjo expressed disappointment in the candidates’ behavior, calling for a shift towards more positive and constructive campaigning.
While Tedjo also criticized Crombie for leaving her mayoral post to pursue provincial leadership, the focus remained on the animosity between Crombie and Parrish. Both candidates acknowledged the need to dial down the hostility in future debates, admitting that things spiraled out of control during the event.
Parrish defended her remarks against Crombie, stating that she had to assert herself amidst the chaos. However, Crombie called for a more respectful and productive dialogue moving forward, highlighting the importance of focusing on substantive issues rather than personal attacks.
