VIFF Launch Spectacular: Jesse Eisenberg’s Directorial Debut ‘The Debut’ Takes Center Stage!

The Debut stands out by featuring a leading lady over 50 in a role that doesn’t dwell on her age. Julianne Moore shines as Mona, a housewife who decides to break free from feeling unnoticed and unappreciated by auditioning for a local play.

Mona’s path crosses with Jerry, played by Paul Giamatti, the director of the play, leading to a transformative and explosive journey. The film unfolds against the backdrop of New Jersey, blending elements of drama, music, and fairy tale magic.

Directed by Jesse Eisenberg, known for his acclaimed role in The Social Network, The Debut marks his third directorial venture and reunites him with Julianne Moore. This follows their collaboration in Eisenberg’s 2022 debut, When You Finish Saving the World, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival Critics’ Week.

Kicking off the 45th annual Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), The Debut has been praised by VIFF’s executive director Kyle Fostner for its unique blend of humor, tension, and thought-provoking storytelling. Fostner notes the film’s accessibility alongside its underlying edge, characteristic of an A24 production.

Choosing The Debut as the festival opener was a carefully considered decision, with Fostner emphasizing the film’s compelling nature and Moore’s exceptional performance as reasons to catch this cinematic gem. Audiences can catch The Debut at the Park Theatre on Oct. 2, with a wider Canadian release scheduled for Dec. 18.

Don’t miss VIFF, running from Oct. 1 to 11, for a diverse showcase of compelling films and experiences.
