12-Year-Old Rushed to Hospital After Firework Explosion in Port Moody

The Port Moody Police Department reported that a young boy was taken to the hospital after a firework exploded and hit him in the face.

According to authorities, the incident occurred just before 8:30 p.m. on Friday, when a group of youths was seen setting off fireworks near the Port Moody Recreation Complex on Ioco Road near Knowle Street.

Upon arrival, officers were surprised to find a 12-year-old boy who had been struck in the face by a firework launched by one of his friends. The boy’s companions initially fled but were apprehended a short distance away.

The injured child was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, with police deeming the incident accidental. However, the youth responsible for igniting the firework received a $500 bylaw ticket.

Sgt. Sam Zacharias emphasized the dangers of fireworks being handled by unauthorized individuals, stating that Port Moody’s bylaws strictly prohibit their use without a valid permit from the Fire Rescue department.

Those violating this regulation risk seizure of fireworks and may receive a violation ticket, Zacharias warned.

The police department noted a rise in fireworks-related incidents in October and reminded residents to familiarize themselves with their local regulations before purchasing or using fireworks.
