Toronto authorities have apprehended and charged two individuals linked to the tragic killing of a 32-year-old man whose body was found in a burning vehicle in Scarborough recently. Meanwhile, a third suspect is still being pursued under a nationwide warrant.
In a recent update, investigators disclosed that Rushon Powell, 25, from Toronto, is facing charges of first-degree murder in connection to the death of Marcus Charles, whereas Shakurwa Jeffrey, also 25 and from Toronto, has been charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.
Devondre Hall, 25, from Toronto, has been identified as a key suspect who remains at large. A Canada-wide warrant for first-degree murder has been issued for his arrest.
The arrests come as part of an inquiry initiated on September 21 following reports of a vehicle engulfed in flames near Steeles Avenue East and Reesor Road in Scarborough at around 11:24 p.m.
Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered a deceased individual inside the vehicle after extinguishing the fire. The victim was later identified as Charles.
Powell was set to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Monday morning, while Jeffrey was expected to have a court appearance on the same day.
The latest developments mark the culmination of a complex investigation that began with the discovery of two burning vehicles in different parts of Toronto on the same evening.
On September 22, police disclosed that they had responded to separate vehicle fires in Scarborough and Etobicoke. It was later revealed that a body was found in each burnt vehicle, leading to suspicions of foul play.
Subsequent investigations determined that both victims had been shot before the vehicles were set on fire, leading to the classification of the deaths as homicides.
The victims were identified as Charles, found in the burned vehicle near Reesor Road and Steeles Avenue East, and Mohamud Kheyre, 30, who was discovered inside a vehicle ablaze near Royal York Road and Edenbridge Drive in Etobicoke.
Officials have confirmed that both Charles and Kheyre were shot before their vehicles were set alight.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding Hall’s whereabouts or details related to the homicides to contact Toronto police at 416-808-7400 or reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously.
