The Department of National Defence (DND) has confirmed to CityNews that two members of the Canadian Armed Forces have been apprehended by Toronto police on charges linked to organized crime, abduction, and the unlawful possession of firearms and weaponry.
The individuals in question, Sachintha Fernando and James Moreau, are currently serving in the 7th Toronto Regiment, stationed at Moss Park Armoury in Toronto, according to the DND.
Fernando joined the Canadian Army as a Reservist in January 2020 and has not participated in any Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) operations to date.
On the other hand, Moreau enlisted in the Canadian Army as a Reservist in March 2018 and was involved in Operation LASER in 2020.
“Following their apprehension, both suspects were relieved of their military responsibilities, and their access to CAF resources, installations, and bases was restricted,” the DND clarified in a statement.
“While they are still part of the CAF pending the resolution of an administrative review, their duties have been suspended. An administrative review is a formal procedure used to evaluate issues that could impact a member’s ongoing service while ensuring procedural fairness.”
CityNews has contacted Toronto police for their input and is anticipating a response.
Stay tuned for updates.
