The Quebec Conservative Party Makes Historic Gains in Recent Election
In a historic turn of events, the Quebec Conservative Party (PCQ) secured its first seat in an election, marking a significant milestone for the modern party.
What started as a single seat, held by leader Éric Duhaime in Bellechasse, quickly blossomed into a remarkable surge for the Quebec Conservatives. Within just an hour of polls closing on election night, the party was on track to secure close to a dozen seats, bringing them tantalizingly close to achieving official status—a key objective for Duhaime in this election.
The majority of these newfound seats were concentrated in the greater Quebec City area, where Duhaime and the PCQ had dedicated much of their campaign efforts.
Among the successful Conservative candidates was Maïté Blanchette Vézina, a familiar face in provincial politics, who triumphed in the riding of La Peltrie. Notably, Blanchette Vézina had previously represented Rimouski, making a strategic move to join the PCQ after departing from the CAQ to sit as an Independent.
Other projected winners included Karine Laflamme in Lévis, who defeated the CAQ’s Bernard Drainville; the youthful Éloïse Coulombe in Charlesbourg; Karim Elayoubi in Chauveau; and Renaud Labrecque in Lotbinière-Frontenac.
The Capitale-Nationale region, known for its historical support for right-of-center conservative parties, played a pivotal role in the Quebec Conservatives’ success in the 2022 election, with some ridings being decided by mere hundreds of votes.
This triumph marks a significant turnaround for Duhaime, who had faced setbacks in previous elections. Despite his unsuccessful bids in the past, the former radio host managed to translate voter support into tangible seats this time around, primarily by focusing on the Quebec City area.
Duhaime’s political journey has been a varied one, from his early days as a parliamentary aide and researcher to more recent roles as a radio personality and now a prominent political figure leading the resurgence of the Quebec Conservative Party.
Throughout the campaign, Duhaime emphasized his party’s unique platform, promising bold reforms such as cutting gas taxes, revisiting the province’s stance on oil and gas extraction, expanding private healthcare options, and implementing significant budget cuts over the coming years.
The recent success of the Quebec Conservative Party signals a new chapter in provincial politics, with Duhaime at the helm steering the party towards a future of change and innovation.
