The alleged accomplice in the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting, 30-year-old James Cody Bryant, was found to have been in communication with the shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, during the tragic incident, as revealed by U.S. investigators.
According to Mike Herrington, the special agent in charge of the FBI Seattle Field Office, Bryant was fully aware when the killings began and even aided Van Rootselaar in moving to another location to continue the violence.
FBI’s investigation uncovered chat records detailing the planning of the February 10 attack, with Van Rootselaar expressing a desire to carry out the most deadly mass shooting in Canadian history. Bryant was reportedly instrumental in suggesting target locations and offering to livestream the horrifying act.
Herrington emphasized the shooter’s intense craving for notoriety, highlighting a pattern seen in past mass shooters where achieving public recognition becomes a driving force.
Experts such as Charles Branas from Columbia University note that a desire for fame and impulsivity often precede such violent acts, emphasizing the importance of identifying and interrupting these moments of impulsivity to prevent future tragedies.
The criminal complaint alleges that Bryant financially supported Van Rootselaar in purchasing materials for an explosive device and equipment for the shooting spree. They also discussed the shooter’s weapons, including a previously confiscated SKS rifle that was later returned by the police.
These revelations have reignited calls for stricter gun control measures, with advocates like Heidi Rathjen from PolySeSouvient stressing the need to prevent similar incidents by addressing lapses in the system that allowed dangerous weapons to be in the hands of potential attackers.
Despite ongoing legal processes, the RCMP has refrained from commenting on the specifics of the weapons used in the shooting.
Bryant was apprehended in Bellingham and faces charges of conspiring to murder individuals in a foreign country, with a possible life sentence hanging over him.
