“Alert: VPD Reports Surge in Distraction Thefts Preying on Seniors, New Victims Speak Out”

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) has issued a new alert aimed at seniors regarding distraction thefts after an 87-year-old man in East Vancouver fell victim to such an incident on a Wednesday afternoon.

According to reports, the elderly man was walking in the vicinity of Renfrew Street and East 1st Avenue when a man and woman in a white car approached him. The woman, seated in the passenger side, struck up a conversation with the man. While shaking hands, she surreptitiously placed fake jewelry on his wrist, simultaneously removing his ring without his notice.

Realizing his ring was missing only after the car had driven off, the man promptly returned home to report the incident to the authorities.

VPD Sgt. Adam Donaldson emphasized, “Distraction theft suspects often adopt a friendly demeanor and invent excuses to get close to their targets. It’s crucial for seniors to recognize these deceptive tactics in order to prevent falling prey to such schemes.”

Seniors are advised by VPD to exercise caution around unfamiliar individuals who attempt to get too close or initiate physical contact. If someone encroaches on personal space, it is recommended to step back, and refrain from allowing strangers to handle personal belongings.
