A tragic loss occurred at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago as Caspian, a 27-year-old female beluga whale from Marineland, passed away despite rescue efforts on Wednesday. She was one of the animals relocated from the closed Niagara Falls theme park over the summer. Unfortunately, Caspian becomes the sixth casualty from this relocation, joining four other belugas and one dolphin.
Caspian’s health had been deteriorating as she struggled to eat properly, with blood tests revealing concerning abnormalities in her electrolyte levels and dangerously acidic blood. This information provided crucial insights into her condition for the veterinary team, although the exact cause of death remains unknown.
Shedd Aquarium disclosed that Caspian was placed on life support for nearly four hours before her passing. Recent necropsies conducted on two other relocated Marineland whales, Peekachu and Rain, revealed underlying chronic illnesses.
The massive relocation operation involving 30 belugas and four dolphins from Marineland to several aquariums in the United States and Spain unfolded over six weeks. Marineland’s decision to move the marine mammals was prompted by financial constraints and the inability to provide adequate care for the animals.
