The Montreal Alouettes Embrace French Lessons to Connect with Fans
The Montreal Alouettes, a Canadian football team, have embarked on a new venture – learning French. In a bid to enhance their linguistic skills, players are engaging in short language sessions to not only improve their French proficiency but also to immerse themselves in Quebec culture and foster stronger bonds with their teammates and supporters.
Head coach Jason Maas views these lessons as more than just vocabulary drills; they symbolize respect towards the province of Quebec and a means to engage with its Francophone community.
Maas emphasized, “We know there’s an Anglophone and a Francophone culture here. We want our guys to be able to talk to all of our fans, whether they’re English-speaking or French-speaking.”
Led by Mélodie Aumais, the team’s marketing project coordinator, these language sessions occur the day before each Alouettes home game. Lasting around 20 to 25 minutes, the lessons focus on practical vocabulary for everyday scenarios like shopping, dining, and discussing time and seasons.
The initiative began with social media videos showcasing players attempting French phrases, spearheaded by Joey Alfieri, the team’s content and communication director. Aumais took over the project and observed its positive impact on social media engagement, motivating the team to continue.
Aumais noted the players’ enthusiasm for the project, with some eagerly anticipating the release of new videos. Their dedication has translated into the classroom, where Aumais witnessed notable improvements in their pronunciation and willingness to incorporate French into daily interactions.
For Francophone player Pier-Olivier Lestage, hearing his English-speaking teammates making an effort to speak French holds significant meaning. He highlighted the importance of understanding Quebec’s distinct culture, particularly its language, to foster stronger team cohesion and connection with local fans.
Wide receiver Tyson Philpot, originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, shared his experience of embracing the lessons as a gesture of support for his Francophone teammates and to integrate into Montreal’s vibrant culture. Despite facing challenges like rolling Rs, he acknowledged the lessons’ positive impact and the team’s broader outreach beyond the football field.
Quarterback Davis Alexander echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the value of bridging linguistic barriers to strengthen the team’s relationship with fans and honor the pride Quebecois members take in their language.
With a lively classroom atmosphere and a competitive spirit driving the learning process, the Alouettes are not only honing their language skills but also forging deeper connections within the team and with the community.
