A tragic incident in Wainwright, Alberta has struck a chord across the nation, with 39 members of the Canadian Armed Forces sustaining injuries. Among them, 19 individuals are currently in critical condition, fighting for their lives in the hospital. Regrettably, four military personnel have lost their lives in this devastating event.

This heartbreaking loss hits close to home in Metro Vancouver, as confirmed by Canada’s Department of National Defence. Among the victims were 23-year-old Pte. Aidan Goulding from North Vancouver and Pte. Hayden Lykkemark from Langley.

Langley Secondary School has lowered its flags to half-mast in honor of the fallen soldiers, including former student, 19-year-old Hayden, who is remembered fondly by his rugby coach, Trevor Plater. Plater described Hayden as a beloved teammate, a remarkable athlete, and someone everyone admired for his kindness and charisma.

In reminiscing about Aidan Goulding, who transitioned from being a mechanic in Langford to serving in the Army, his former colleague Jason Aquino shared a heartwarming anecdote. Before departing for his military service, Aidan gifted Aquino his toolbox, a gesture that left a lasting impact on Aquino and serves as a constant reminder of their time together.

The outpouring of tributes for these two soldiers has been immense, with people from all corners of the country expressing their condolences. B.C. Premier David Eby urged unity and support for the grieving families during this trying time.

Adding to the devastating news, Sgt. Morgan Wong from Edmonton and Pte. Shaun Farrell from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan also lost their lives in the fire. The Canadian military has revealed that while they were aware of a wildfire in the vicinity, they did not anticipate the severity of the situation until a sudden windstorm claimed lives and caused severe injuries to numerous soldiers.
