In an effort to prevent suicides in Montreal’s metro system, the Quebec coroner’s office has put forth a set of recommendations following a detailed analysis of cases involving four men who tragically took their own lives in the metro in 2024.
Among the recommendations is an urgent call to expedite the study of installing screen doors on metro platforms, originally scheduled for 2033. Additionally, the coroners are advocating for increased video surveillance and more staff members trained to identify and assist individuals displaying signs of distress.
Recognizing the complexity of suicide, the coroners stress that it can stem from various underlying factors and vulnerabilities. Shockingly, between 2015 and 2023, 92 individuals lost their lives to suicide in the metro, averaging around 10 per year.
This crucial report by The Canadian Press was initially released on October 22, 2025.
