A Toronto police officer fired their gun during a carjacking investigation in Mississauga on Wednesday night, leading to one suspect being apprehended while another remains on the run, as per officials.
The episode took place around 8:55 p.m. in the vicinity of Tomken Road and Dundas Street, where Toronto Police Service (TPS) personnel were actively looking into a reported carjacking.
Reportedly, TPS officers encountered two suspects in the area, resulting in an officer discharging their firearm during the interaction. It has not been confirmed whether anyone was hit by the gunfire.
Following the incident, one suspect was taken into custody at the scene, while the other suspect managed to escape and is currently evading authorities. Police are actively pursuing leads to track down the fleeing individual. Thankfully, no officers sustained injuries during the event.
Peel Regional Police noted that they were summoned to aid TPS officers in managing the scene but were not directly involved in the altercation.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which oversees police conduct in Ontario, has initiated an investigation in line with its mandate. The SIU steps in to examine incidents involving the police that result in severe injury, death, or the discharge of a firearm at an individual.
