“Montreal Launches Groundbreaking Specialized Court to Tackle Sexual and Domestic Violence”

The Montreal courthouse has taken a significant step forward by introducing a specialized court dedicated to handling cases of sexual violence and domestic abuse.

Quebec’s Justice Minister, Simon Jolin-Barrette, emphasized the importance of empowering victims to come forward without hesitation. The specialized court signifies a cultural shift within Quebec’s justice system, prioritizing the needs and well-being of victims. The ultimate goal is to create a supportive and safe environment where victims feel heard and understood.

This initiative was established in Montreal due to the existing victim support systems, such as Côté Cour, which will enhance the court’s ability to cater to the specific needs of those affected by sexual and domestic violence.

The specialized court will offer tailored support for victims throughout their legal journey. It will provide training on handling cases of sexual and domestic violence to all involved parties, ensuring a comprehensive approach to victim advocacy. Additionally, the court will offer testimonial aids, including screens and remote testimony, to facilitate a victim-centered process.

Creating a secure space for victims, the specialized court aims to minimize interactions between victims and alleged aggressors, offering a sense of protection and comfort.

Acknowledging Montreal’s leadership in supporting victims of domestic violence, Minister Chantal Rouleau highlighted the ongoing efforts to expand and improve victim services. The province’s commitment includes the addition of 25 socio-judicial liaison workers dedicated to the specialized court, streamlining support services and minimizing the trauma of retelling experiences.

The specialized court will have six prosecutors and three technicians dedicated to handling cases, ensuring continuity and personalized care for victims throughout their legal journey. This approach aims to alleviate the fears and apprehensions that often prevent victims from seeking justice.

With 24 specialized courts across Quebec, the province emphasizes that the introduction of these courts does not alter existing laws or the rights of the accused. The specialized courts are designed to enhance victim support and ensure a more compassionate and effective legal process.
