Montreal Canadiens Lock In Defense Ace Mike Matheson for a Striking Five-Year Deal!

The Montreal Canadiens have secured defenseman Mike Matheson for the long haul with a lucrative five-year contract extension worth US$30 million. The official announcement was made in Las Vegas ahead of a game against the Golden Knights.

Matheson’s contract extension will kick in for the upcoming season and will keep him with the Canadiens until the end of the 2030-31 season. Hailing from Pointe-Claire, Quebec, the 31-year-old has showcased his skills this season with four goals, 10 assists, and an impressive plus-13 differential in 22 games.

Known for his reliability and defensive prowess, Matheson leads the Canadiens in ice time, averaging close to 25 minutes per game in what marks his fourth season in Montreal. Originally a first-round pick of the Florida Panthers in 2012, Matheson joined the Canadiens after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2022.

This significant move solidifies Matheson’s commitment to the Canadiens and highlights the team’s investment in his skills for the seasons to come.
