Today, the family of a 15-year-old boy tragically killed by Longueuil police officers is scheduled to address the public. The incident, which occurred in September, is still under investigation by the Bureau des enquêtes indépendante (BEI), the agency responsible for looking into police actions in Quebec. The boy’s mother, Fahima Rezayi, accompanied by the family’s legal representatives Fernando Belton and Virginie Dufresne-Lemire, will be sharing their perspective on the incident.
The teenager, Nooran Rezayi, a dedicated high school student, lost his life following a police response to a 911 call reporting a group of people potentially armed in a Longueuil neighborhood. Despite claims from his family that he was unarmed and only carrying a backpack filled with school materials, the BEI has confirmed that no firearm was discovered on the boy.
The tragic shooting has evoked a strong sense of concern and frustration among not only the family and friends of the victim but also the wider community. Many fear that the investigation may not result in significant consequences. In response to mounting skepticism, BEI director Brigitte Bishop recently held a rare briefing, emphasizing the agency’s autonomy and urging the public to have faith in the investigative process as they engage with the officers involved.
