Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier has called on Quebec’s Public Security Minister, Ian Lafrenière, to initiate an investigation into the Longueuil Police Service (SPAL) following concerns raised about the handling of a fatal shooting incident involving a 15-year-old named Nooran Rezayi in September.
Fournier’s request for an investigation stems from alleged breaches of legal and regulatory obligations by the SPAL in notifying the police watchdog agency, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI). The mayor emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability within the police force.
The family’s lawyers expressed support for the mayor’s actions, citing concerns over potential interference with the investigation to protect SPAL members. The lawyers also mentioned a recent lawsuit filed against SPAL, accusing the police of using excessive force during the incident.
In response to the mayor’s request, Minister Lafrenière stated that his ministry is reviewing the situation to determine the appropriate course of action to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation.
