Moisson Montréal Steps Up to Meet Growing Food Assistance Needs
Food insecurity is on the rise in Montreal, leading Moisson Montréal to launch its inaugural Holiday Mega Distribution, aiming to provide support to families facing tough times. The organization is set to distribute 42,000 holiday baskets to address the surge in demand due to escalating living costs and the holiday closure of food banks.
During the event held on Friday, Dec. 12, volunteers, partners, and community groups came together to form a symbolic human chain, loading the baskets onto trucks bound for local organizations.
According to Matias Duque, Moisson Montréal’s director of philanthropy, the primary driver behind the increasing need for food assistance is the soaring cost of living. Duque highlighted a 54% spike in food assistance requests over the past four years, attributing it to the disparity between income levels and rising expenses.
The organization serves as a vital lifeline for over 1.1 million individuals each month, equivalent to filling two Bell Centres daily. With hundreds of community agencies relying on Moisson Montréal for food distribution, the strain on resources has become overwhelming.
To ensure families have access to essential food items during the holiday closure period, Moisson Montréal has curated 10-kilogram holiday boxes filled with staple foods like rice, pasta, sauces, meatball stew, peanut butter, and more. The focus is on providing nutritious, filling options to sustain families through the temporary service interruptions.
In a bid to showcase solidarity and support, the organization engaged hundreds of volunteers, including dedicated individuals like Daniel Handfield, who have been tirelessly contributing to the cause for years. Handfield emphasized the importance of addressing the increasing food needs within the community and how volunteering provides an opportunity to give back and make a difference.
The holiday distribution event also featured a cooking challenge led by renowned chef and Moisson Montréal spokesperson Stefano Faita, using ingredients from the holiday baskets. This initiative goes beyond just distributing food; it aims to demonstrate unity and compassion during a time of escalating demand.
