During the holiday season, many women facing homelessness or vulnerability in Montreal often feel the ache of what they lack. However, this December, Chez Doris is on a mission to swap out feelings of isolation with connection, compassion, and joy.
On December 13, the downtown day center threw a festive Christmas bash for approximately 30 vulnerable mothers and 60 children. The gathering was filled with family photos, toys, gift cards, and boxes of non-perishable groceries donated by Moisson Montréal, providing both festive cheer and essential support to families in need.
Established in 1977, Chez Doris supports over 1,700 women annually by offering meals, clothing, medical assistance, financial advice, and access to both temporary and permanent housing. The organization’s goal is to empower women in fragile situations while creating a safe and respectful environment for them.
Executive director Diane Pilote expressed that the mother-and-children celebration is a standout event for Chez Doris each year.
“This is our Christmas day party for mothers and children,” Pilote stated. “It’s a unique occasion where we celebrate the women we’ve assisted in finding homes and affordable housing.”
Pilote emphasized that the event’s success is a collaborative effort involving staff, volunteers, and donors. Children receive personalized gifts, while mothers are treated to comfort items exclusively for themselves.
In addition to a spectacular magic show, the festivities included crafts, face painting, and a delightful meal, creating a warm and festive atmosphere for all attendees.
Pilote pointed out that the holidays can be particularly challenging for women dealing with homelessness or instability, underscoring the importance of community gatherings in providing support and companionship.
She stressed the significance of nurturing children, stating that aiding the next generation is crucial in offering hope and love, especially during the festive season.
The mother-and-children party is highlighted as Chez Doris’s most significant Christmas event, aiming to make participants feel special and cherished during the holidays.
Apart from the December 13 celebration, Chez Doris hosted various holiday activities throughout the month, including restaurant outings, festive meals, and a New Year’s Day brunch, all designed to bring joy and companionship to those in need.
